An errand cat jumping on the windowsill startles me awake.
Identifying the cause for the disruption of my slumber, I settle back down, close my eyes, and attempt to recapture Morpheus' attention.
It's dark in the room. I feel, more than see, someone looking at me. Everything is so quiet, save for the breathing, that I can almost hear thoughts traveling.
Gingerly, tenderly, a hand smooths my hair. Then, ever so slowly and carefully, an arm wraps around me. The shape shifts and settles, breathing warmly into my neck.
Girl? Are you asleep?
No. The noise woke me up.
Me too.
Silence.
Boy? What are you thinking?
That you will be the first thing I see when I wake up in the morning. You'll have left the City by the end of the day, but you'll still be with me. The first thing I saw that day.
Smile.
I love you, Boy.
I love you too, Girl.
We go back to sleep.
